David: The Dichotomy of Resistance
As we journey through the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, we see King David go from a man that didn't make a move without inquiring of God, a man who drew strength from the Lord, to someone who commits adultery and subsequently murders one of his faithful warriors. So what happened? He became idle and went into "relax" mode because everything was seemingly going his way. This probably wasn't overnight but the truth is that we need resistance for strength. If everything just went according to plan then we would forget God. If we never had issues, resistance, or problems then our prayer life would look a lot different. It is the unique dichotomy where in we do not get one without the other. If we find ourselves in a situation where we no longer have the resistance then we are weakened by it. Many times, without the "stress" of life, we find ourselves growing weak, especially when it comes to spiritual matters.
