Earning God's Love?
Early on in his life, Jacob was someone who we probably would not necessarily like. He was a manipulator, thief, and just overall not a good person. In fact, if we had been able to meet Jacob and his brother Esau, then chances are we would have liked Esau much better. However, that did not stop God from loving Jacob. Scripture tells us in both the old and new testament, "I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau". Why would God love Esau less than Jacob? God chose to love Jacob to reveal to us that we do not earn His love. He loves the unlovable, accepts the unacceptable, and forgives the unforgivable. We do not have to be "good enough" to be loved by God. That idea is not taught in the Bible. God chose us based on His own reasons and not on our own merit. God loves us and desires to spend eternity with us because doing so makes Him happy.
